While Waiting for the Big One has a bold facade, with prominent title pages and assertive lettering, the photographs within are of a more subtle nature. Its contents are black and white photos taken by Matthew with various film cameras between 2003 and 2010.
For the most part, the bulk of the images are candid and intimate photographs of people in a public space, lending an element of voyeurism to the captured moment. Conscious images of people being invisible, people in the midst of something and unaware of being a subject. Like a photo taken looking in through the window of a supermarket of a food worker preparing an order. Or one looking down from a balcony at a busy center: a couple having a conversation on the steps, a man taking a photo from a lower balcony, and a woman having a smoke in a secluded corner as a blur of persons in motion pass by her. Some of them capture a feeling of solitude and space. Like the upward side shot of an illuminated stripped billboard above a liquor store; the strong light against the empty and peeling billboard in the dark evoking a feeling of exposed indignity. Or even a moment of exposed and disrupted solitude in a photo where the subject is conscious of the photographer. The picture is of a diner worker whose downtime is disturbed when he notices the photographer taking his picture through the window of the empty diner.
