creator: Edda Aßel
Edda, whom I know as a talented felting artist and an all-around incredible crafter (my suspicion being that she makes a lot of other cool stuff that she doesn’t ultimately upload), sent me her very first zine creation. I found it waiting for me in my mailbox after driving through pounding rain and blinding bursts of lightning coming back home on Friday.
Bears is a 1/8-sized mini zine pressed from her own carved stamps. She sent me both a photocopied version and one hand stamped in color, of which the pages you can see above. Following the title, each page is a block print reproduction of a type of bear (n.b. anteater in German is “ant bear”). While there are no words, it’s a zine with distinct character. Each one of the bears wears an expression akin to a caught-off-guard type of look that I find amusing, as if someone took an unexpected photograph. It’s simple; it’s charming; and it’s painstainkingly handmade. I’m glad to welcome Edda to the world of zines!
p.s. If you’re interested in trading for her zine, contact Edda through her Tumblr Ask page.
