title: Let’s Not Fall into a Hole & Can’t Sleep? Try This!
pages: 6 & 6
One-sheet minizines are always interesting. Because they’re so small and relatively easy to plan and make, they don’t normally carry the weight of great expectations in their limited 6-page frame. With that narrow a margin of disappointment, it leaves generous room for pleasant surprises in content and execution. Besides, if you’ve made some yourself in the past, you’re more likely inspecting how neatly or sloppily it’s been folded.
These two minis are themed around the creator’s struggles with misdirection and poor sleep. Although both are based on real-life quirks and difficulties, they are a light and humorous take, which made them well-adapted for the one-sheet mini format.
Let’s Not Fall into a Hole is surprisingly packed with illustration and text. So much so that it almost looks cluttered in the small page frames. But in terms of content makes it value for the money. In brief, this zine is about how, in spite of her practicality and meticulous preparation, a sense of direction still seems to elude her.
If you suffer from insomnia, you’ll commiserate with Maiji’s Can’t Sleep? Try This! zine. While it doesn’t provide any solution, she does offer her experience with touted remedies and gimmicks, as well as an opinion on behavioral therapy for it.
Unrelated as they are, the two zines actually echo a common theme of perseverance and acceptance. While the two qualities are both statements of character, they’re also being put forward as part of a personal mantra: accepting and understanding your situation while pursuing an affirmative outlook.
